This is the number of beaches in Greece that have been recognised this year with a Blue Flag – second place among 47 countries across the world. The Blue Flag programme requires that beaches achieve excellent bathing water quality.

The Blue Flag initiative for beaches and marinas is run by the international, nongovernmental, non-profit organisation FEE (the Foundation for Environmental Education), based in Denmark, with 73 countries as members. Today, Blue Flag has become a truly global programme with an ever-increasing number of countries participating. Over the years, the Blue Flag has become a highly respected and recognised eco-label working to bring together the tourism and environmental sectors.
