Paros is widely known for its lively summer atmosphere, bustling beaches, and vibrant Naoussa marina. Yet during Easter, the island reveals a quieter, more spiritual side, deeply rooted in tradition and community.

Throughout Holy Week, the focus shifts to the mountain villages where some of the most authentic customs on the island come to life.

On Good Friday, alongside the solemn Epitaphios processions held throughout Greece, Paros offers a unique tradition: Passion plays. As dusk falls, the narrow lanes and quiet squares of villages such as Marpissa, Lefkes, Prodromos, Aspro Horio, Marmara and Lagada transform into open-air stages. Homes, courtyards, and gardens become part of the setting as the entire community gathers to witness and take part in the unfolding story. Illuminated by torchlight, local youth in costume reenact the Passion of Christ across fifteen stations set along the mountainous landscape -a tradition dating back to before World War II.

By Easter Saturday morning, the atmosphere softens. In a gentle prelude to the coming celebration, young girls dressed as angels appear in doorways and village squares, offering a quiet vision of hope -a serene moment before the vibrant festivities of the night.

On Holy Saturday evening, the island comes alive with light and joy. The iconic Panagia Ekatontapyliani Church in Parikia hosts one of the most atmospheric Resurrection services, while smaller chapels across the island provide more intimate celebrations under the warm glow of candlelight.

Easter Sunday brings a complete transformation. In Naoussa and throughout the villages, long communal tables are filled with food, wine, and laughter. In Marpissa, the beloved “Table of Love” embodies the spirit of the day as locals grill and share food with all who gather, welcoming everyone to a celebration of music and togetherness.
