The Peloponnese is one of Greece’s most historic and vibrant wine regions, blending ancient tradition with modern innovation. Nemea, the country’s largest grape-growing area and a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) region for red wines comprising 16 villages and over 40 wineries, is renowned for its signature grape: the agiorgitiko -a favorite of the mythical King Agamemnon. The finest examples are produced in small vineyards and aged in oak barrels and bottles for several years. Nearby, Mantineia, in Arcadia, is celebrated for its moschofilero, a pink-skinned variety that yields aromatic, sophisticated white wines.
Nemea terroir
Nemea’s wines and vineyards are located near important archaeological and historical sites, such as Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio, and have been renowned since ancient times. The region’s wine story begins in mythology with Heracles, who was offered black grape wine by a nymph after defeating the Nemean Lion. In antiquity, Fliassian wine, served during the Nemean Games, was the equivalent of today’s PDO Nemea wine. This acclaimed wine is made exclusively from Agiorgitiko grapes and reflects its terroir. The region’s variations in altitude, topography, microclimate, and soil composition contribute to the versatility of its grapes, enabling the production of many different styles of wine, including fresh rosé, robust aged red, and sweet dessert wine.
A highlight of the Wine Roads of the Peloponnese, Nemea offers scenic vineyard routes, renowned wineries, and authentic local cuisine. Each September, the Great Days of Nemea festival honors honors the Agiorgitiko grape with tastings, tours, music, and traditional celebrations. Visitors enjoy an unforgettable journey through one of Greece’s most iconic wine regions, whether they visit historic estates or boutique producers.
